RC1 Installed

We've upgrated our cluster to the latest Compute Cluster Server 2003 Release Candidate 1.
Till now, all our jobs are running smoothly.

CPMD for Windows Cluster

The CPMD (Car-Parrinello Molecular Dynamics) code (http://www.cpmd.org/) is a plane wave/pseudopotential implementation of Density Functional Theory, particularly designed for ab-initio molecular dynamics. The newest version is 3.11. CPMD runs on many different computer architectures and it is well parallelized (MPI and Mixed MPI/SMP).

 

Currently, we have successfully ported it to Windows Cluster and have a good parallelization. The porting tools include

  • Visual Studio 2003 with Intel Fortran Compiler 9.0 for IA 32 Application
  • Intel Math Kernel Library 8.1 Cluster Edition for Windows and
  • Microsoft Compute Cluster Pack MPI Libarary.

Test jobs are submitted by Compute Cluster Job Manager Version 1.0.0589.0. Some testing results are shown below and compared with the ones obtained in a Linux cluster.

Linux Cluster configuration (Dawning 4000A, Rank 42th in the latest Top 500 list)

    512 nodes, each with 4 AMD Opteron 2.4GHz CPUs, 8G Memory,  connected with Myrinet 2000.

Window Cluster configuration:

     8 nodes, the same node as Dawning 4000A, connected with Gigabit Ethernet. (lack of Myrinet driver)

 

We're about to perform more testing of this CPMD version.

36GB local disk each + 150GB SCSI disk array
100Mb Ethernet + 1Gb Ethernet + Myrinet2000

3) Intel Fortran 8.0

1) Auto-tuned HPCC for Windows

yeah! windows cluster successfully installed

     After a whole week effort , this afternoon we installed windows computer clulster pack successfully with the help of Mason,the handsome guy from MS ATC, Shanghai .

Report of Microsoft compute cluster solution

    Feb 28 ,2006, we seven person together went to Microsoft research centre to attend a meeting.Microsoft employees give us an excellent lecture on the features of Visual Studio 2005 and Microsoft compute cluster solution. Through the report ,we have a little idea of what Microsoft do in HPC and feature of its product, which  gave us help of our currrent work . Atfter the report we present some questions and  feedback some requirement we met in practice in aspects of job schedule etc. It is a good chance to learn each other.

A larger cluster's on the way~~

We're now upgrading our cluster. The new system comes with
 
8 nodes, each with 4 CPUs
CPU:           AMD Opteron 2.4G
Mem:          8G
Local Disk:   36G SCSI
Disk Array:   500G SAN
Interconnect:     Myrinet 2000 & Gigabit Ethernet
 
This cluster with Gigabit network will be ready before Feb. 17th.
And the myrinet facilities will arrived in months.

CPU:   Intel Xeon 3.2 GHz , with HT technolgoy, single core
 
Node: 5 2-way nodes, each with 2 CPUs.
 
Interconnect:  Gigabit Ethernet
 
Network topology: Each node with a public and a private network. (Scenerio 2)
 
CCS build: Beta 2
